Handwoven in Northern Ghana, Bolga Baskets embody generations of heritage and craftsmanship. Once used for food storage and ceremonies, today, they provide fair wages and empowerment to artisans—primarily women weavers in Bolgatanga.

Made from durable, sustainable veta vera grass, each bag is a labor of love, taking 5 to 15 days to complete. Twisting, dyeing, and weaving by hand, artisans bring to life one-of-a-kind creations, each carrying their unique fingerprint. No two baskets are ever the same—each tells a story of tradition, resilience, and artistry.

Aketekete collaborates with local dyers in Accra and its surroundings, primarily small family-owned businesses that have preserved the tradition of Batik and Tie & Dye for generations. These hand-dyeing techniques, renowned internationally, involve meticulous wax-resist printing and layering of natural dyes, resulting in distinctive patterns and rich, vibrant hues. Every piece of fabric used in our bags is carefully designed, dyed, and handcrafted, making each bag truly unique.

Thoughtful Materials & Sustainable Practices

Staying true to our commitment to sustainability, we use overstock and repurposed textiles, such as old curtains and bedsheets, to create our bag linings, removable fabric handles, and interior pockets. This ensures that our production remains as eco-conscious as possible, reducing waste while honoring natural fibers like cotton and linen.

Hand-Tailored Finishing Touches

All fabric elements in Aketekete’s pieces—including linings, handle wraps, and jewelry purses—are sewn by our dedicated tailor, Salomey, in Accra. With precision and care, each bag is finished to the highest standard, ensuring that it is as functional as it is beautiful.
